Comment History | A report recently came out showing that American students in private schools (when socio-economic status was accounted for) were lagging behind in math just as badly as American students in public schools, when compared to our international neighbors. The cultural problems that beset one school or one set of schools inevitably beset all of them. |
 | There's still plenty of people who go to college and succeed from public schools. The majority I'm sure. Private schools are largely "sold" by the same thought process that goes into making people buy bottled water. Oh, you can't drink city water, that stuff is terrible for you! Here, drink someone else's city water! LOL There's no evidence bottled water is better than municipal city water (actually some evidence that would suggest the reverse), and likewise with private vs. public schools. |
 | Most private schools are NOT the expensive schools that exist largely to serve a wealthy clientele. Those are the private schools that last, yes, but most private schools are church-based and come and go with regularity and they do NOT provide the services and education that public schools provide. In the same way that most parents who home-school can't adequately provide the educational background and support that public schools can, although there's a small percentage of parents who can do so. That's why private schools and home-schooling are never going to be the answer for most of society, and that's why we have to have strong public schools. |
 | Unfortunately, my own daughter who lives in a ATL suburb in DeKalb county, has chosen to send my grand daughters to private and VERY pricey private schools. Offends my egalitarian soul. BUT she can justify her reasons. Doesn'tmake it better. And the 28,00 a year she spends to do it, makes me CHOKE!!!! |
Original Post | CHecking out David PErdue's remarks in Gainesville Times today. Wouldn't normally bother, but his remarks are so egregious, I couldn't help doing my own fact check. :He isn't doing badly at untruths. doing badly on untruths. Today in the Gainesville Times, you are quoted as saying that you are opposed to Common Core and that 50 years of federalized education have failed. Then you go on to say that countries like Peru and Columbia perform better in math and science at the 14yo level. You use that as proof that federalization of education has failed in the US. JUST SO YOU KNOW: Peru has the best education in South America with free public education from K-college. - and it is nationalized . Columbia also has a nationalized education system. Both have dictates from the national education ministry to the local level. |
