I'm not much of a drinker, and I do have concerns about drunk driving and substance abuse, but I don't think the sale of liquor locally would increase that - if anything it would a) negatively affect alcohol sales in Helen, which has the county monopoly and b) perhaps even decrease drunk driving as folks would not have to travel to Helen or Lumpkin County to buy their liquor. Mostly I find it problematic that the commission decided for themselves whether or not we as citizens should have the opportunity (right) to decide for ourselves on this matter, especially since it did evidently get a motion and a second, initially. It smacks of the commission taking on a "parental" role and seeing the "public" as children needing to be protected from ourselves. (also, I'm really glad I asked, because not knowing you or whether you lived in Lumpkin or White counties, I could have drawn the erroneous conclusion that your "good for us" was an indication that you thought their decision was "good for us" in White County by preventing the "evils" of alcohol being available! PHEW!!! False assumption averted!!!)" - Reply to this email to comment on this status.
