They were all relatively small corporations and when it came to determining who stayed and who was let go it was pretty much determined by the individual's production and initiative. Why would any business owner keep unproductive people? Only government can afford people who contribute very little. Since four out of five start ups fail, the people who are willing to risk their own money to start a business, and especially those who succeed, are American heroes!
